# Gold-Filled vs. Vermeil vs. PVD: How These Jewelry Finishes Are Made — and How They Actually Differ

Gold jewelry that is not solid gold can look almost identical in product photos. On the skin, and after months of wear, the differences are large. Gold-filled, vermeil, and PVD are three distinct ways of putting a gold (or gold-colored) surface on another metal. They use different base metals, different bonding methods, different legal standards, and they age differently.

This guide explains how each one is made, what the rules actually require, and how to choose among them.

## Why the process matters more than the color

A gold-colored finish can be:

- a thick sheet of real karat gold fused to a core
- a legally defined layer of gold electroplated onto sterling silver
- an ultra-thin film bonded in a vacuum chamber

Those three methods produce different gold content, hardness, water resistance, and lifespan. Price follows the method, not just the look.

## 1. Gold-filled jewelry

### What it is

Gold-filled (often stamped **14K GF**, **1/20 14K GF**, or similar) is a composite material: a substantial layer of karat gold mechanically bonded to a base-metal core, usually brass.

In the United States, “gold-filled” is a regulated term. To use it, the gold must generally be at least 10K, and the gold layer must account for **at least 1/20 (5%) of the item’s total metal weight**. That is far more gold than typical plating.

The name is slightly misleading. The piece is not hollow and “filled” with gold. A thick gold layer is bonded to the outside of a cheaper core.

### How it is made

The process is mechanical, not a quick dip.

1. **Materials.** A sheet (or tube) of karat gold — commonly 12K or 14K — is prepared to a calculated thickness. The core is usually jeweler’s brass.
2. **Bonding.** Gold and core are stacked (single-clad on one side, or double-clad on both). They are heated and pressed under high pressure so the metals diffuse and fuse. This is a metallurgical bond, not a painted-on film.
3. **Rolling or drawing.** The bonded sandwich is rolled into sheet or drawn into wire/tube. Rolling thins the whole stack while keeping the gold-to-core ratio. The gold layer stays proportionally thick.
4. **Fabrication.** The gold-filled stock is cut, stamped, formed, soldered, and finished like other jewelry metal.

Because the gold is already part of the stock, the layer on a finished piece is typically many times thicker than electroplating — often on the order of tens of microns, depending on gauge and construction.

### What that means in wear

- High real-gold content relative to plated jewelry.
- Strong resistance to everyday abrasion compared with thin plating.
- Not solid gold. High-wear spots (ring shanks, clasp edges, chain links) can eventually show the core if worn hard for years.
- Occasional water is usually fine; chlorine, salt water, and harsh chemicals still accelerate wear.
- If the gold wears through, a brass core can discolor or irritate sensitive skin.

Gold-filled is often the closest everyday alternative to solid gold in look and longevity, at a mid-range price.

## 2. Vermeil

### What it is

Vermeil (pronounced **ver-MAY**) is **sterling silver** coated with a relatively thick layer of gold.

In U.S. jewelry guides, a piece sold as vermeil generally must have:

- a **sterling silver** base (92.5% silver, often marked 925)
- gold of **at least 10K**
- a gold layer equivalent to **at least 2.5 microns of fine gold**

That last point is important. “2.5 microns” is specified as fine gold. A 14K alloy is only about 58% gold, so the physical coating often needs to be thicker than 2.5 microns to meet the fine-gold equivalent. Quality makers commonly plate 2.5–5 microns or more.

Vermeil is not the same as ordinary “gold plated” jewelry, which is usually a thinner gold layer on brass, copper, or another cheap alloy, with no sterling requirement.

### How it is made

Vermeil is an electroplating process on a precious-metal core.

1. **Make the silver piece.** The design is cast, stamped, or fabricated in sterling silver, then soldered and assembled.
2. **Polish and clean.** Surfaces are polished, then ultrasonically cleaned. Any oil, oxide, or residue causes poor adhesion.
3. **Activate the surface.** Chemical preparation helps gold bond evenly. Some makers add a barrier layer; nickel barriers are common in cheap plating but are not ideal for “vermeil” positioning and sensitive skin.
4. **Electroplate.** The silver piece is placed in a gold electrolyte bath. Current drives gold ions onto the surface. Time and current density control thickness. Reaching vermeil thickness takes far longer than a fashion “flash” plate.
5. **Verify.** Reputable factories check thickness with X-ray fluorescence (XRF) at flats, edges, and recesses, because edges plate thinner.

### What that means in wear

- Premium feel from the silver core; good choice for many people with metal sensitivities *as long as the gold layer is intact*.
- Thicker and more regulated than standard gold plate, so it lasts longer — often one to several years with care, not weeks.
- Still a surface coating. Friction, perfume, sweat, chlorine, and salt water wear it down.
- If gold thins, sterling can tarnish underneath and the color can shift.
- Best treated as demi-fine jewelry: beautiful for regular wear, not indestructible.

## 3. PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition)

### What it is

PVD is a **vacuum coating** process, not electroplating and not gold-filled sheet. Jewelry (often 316L stainless steel, sometimes titanium or another alloy) goes into a sealed chamber. A target material is vaporized; atoms travel through vacuum and condense on the piece as a dense, tightly bonded film.

Two important nuances:

- Some PVD jewelry uses **real gold** as the target (true gold PVD).
- Much commercial “gold PVD” uses hard ceramic films such as **titanium nitride (TiN)** or **zirconium nitride (ZrN)** that *look* like gold, sometimes with a very thin real-gold top coat.

The visible layer is usually very thin — often roughly **0.05–0.5 microns**, sometimes up to about 1–2 microns depending on the system — but it can be much **harder** than electroplated gold.

### How it is made

1. **Surgical-level cleaning.** Oil or dust prevents atomic bonding. Pieces are degreased, ultrasonically cleaned, and often plasma-cleaned.
2. **Vacuum.** The chamber is pumped down so vaporized atoms are not scattered by air.
3. **Vaporize the target.** Common methods:
   - **Magnetron sputtering** — ions knock atoms off a gold or nitride target.
   - **Cathodic arc** — an arc vaporizes the target into a highly ionized plasma.
4. **Deposit and bond.** Atoms strike the jewelry and form a compact film. Reactive gases (nitrogen, etc.) can create gold-colored nitrides. Pieces are usually rotated so coverage is even.
5. **Optional stacks.** Industrial decorative PVD often uses a hard underlayer (e.g., TiN) plus a thin gold-colored or real-gold top layer for color.

### What that means in wear

- Excellent scratch, sweat, and water resistance compared with conventional plating.
- Stainless-steel PVD is popular for everyday, sport, and “wear in the shower” fashion jewelry.
- Color can be very stable for years because the film is hard and chemically inert.
- Gold *content by weight* is tiny if the film is only a fraction of a micron — even when real gold is used.
- Edges can chip on sharp impact; a chip is hard to touch up without recoating the whole piece.
- “Gold PVD” on a listing does not automatically mean a thick layer of karat gold. Read whether the brand uses real gold, a gold-look nitride, or both.

PVD is the modern industrial answer when durability and low maintenance matter more than precious-metal weight.

## How to read product listings

Look for specifics, not just the word “gold.”

- **Gold-filled:** karat + GF or 1/20 (example: `14/20 14K GF`).
- **Vermeil:** sterling or 925 + vermeil + micron thickness + karat (example: `14K gold vermeil, 2.5 microns over 925`).
- **PVD:** base metal (`316L`), whether the coating is real gold or TiN/ZrN, and any micron or “ion plated / PVD coated” language.

Vague terms — “gold plated,” “gold finish,” “golden stainless” — usually mean a thin decorative coat with no gold-filled or vermeil standard behind them.

## Care, in brief

**Gold-filled**  
Wipe after wear. Occasional water is usually acceptable. Remove for pools, hot tubs, and heavy gym sweat if you want maximum life. Store dry.

**Vermeil**  
Treat it more carefully than gold-filled. Remove before showering, swimming, and applying perfume or lotion. Dry thoroughly. Silver polishing cloths can be too abrasive on the gold layer; use a soft cloth.

**PVD**  
Typically the lowest-maintenance of the three. Still avoid abrasive cleaners and sharp impacts on edges. Mild soap and water is usually enough.

None of these is solid gold. All will last longer if they are not worn as tools.

- Choose **gold-filled** when you want a meaningful amount of real gold and years of everyday wear without solid-gold pricing.
- Choose **vermeil** when you want a sterling silver core, a regulated gold thickness, and a more “precious” construction for pieces you will care for.
- Choose **PVD** when you want color that stands up to water, sweat, and frequent wear, especially on stainless steel — and you are comfortable with a high-tech coating rather than a thick karat-gold layer.

The right finish is the one that matches how the piece will actually be worn, not only how it looks in a photo.
